Butcher blocks are great to look at but they will not stay that way without proper care. There are three crucial steps to follow – cleaning, sanitizing and sealing – to ensure that your butcher block last for years. Cleaning can be done with soapy water. Give it a little scrub with a soapy sponge and then rinse with hot water. Wipe it completely dry.

You also want to sanitize your butcher block. This can be done with 4 parts of water to one part of vinegar. Spray the solution liberally on the board and let soak for about 5 minutes. Rinse again and let air dry before applying oil. Whether you have a walnut butcher block or one made of other kinds of wood, it is important to seal it with food grade mineral oil. These are available in places where they sell cutting boards.
